Our ophthalmology department has a dedicated clinic for the treatment of strabismus and children.
Cause and treatment of strabismus?
Strabismus is a condition in which the two eyes are not aligned correctly. Esotropia is when the eyes are driven inward. Exotropia is classified if eyes open outward, and vertical strabismus if eyes open upward and downward. Usually, it seems normal, but sometimes (when looking far, dazing, daydreaming, and being scared) strabismus appears, and there are also cases where the head is tilted due to strabismus.
Since there are so many different types and treatment methods of strabismus, It is not possible to explain everything in a short space, so the questions that patients and guardians generally ask about strabismus in a question-and-answer format will be provided.
There is no strabismus in my family... Is it hereditary?
Only a few cases of strabismus are caused by heredity, and there are more unknown causes than known ones.
Can glasses cure strabismus?
In some cases of adjustable esotropia and hepatic exotropia, the strabismus can be corrected with only glasses.
In addition, special glasses such as prisms, single eye occlusion method (a method of covering one eye for a certain period), and visual training (exercises that make the eyes gather or widen) are effective in treating or reducing strabismus, so only surgery It is not all about treatment.
What is the method of strabismus surgery?
Surgery is performed to adjust the various muscles that move the eyes in balance.
For example, in the case of exotropia, in which the eyes go outward, surgery weakens the strength of the muscles to look outward or strengthens the strength of the muscles to look inward.
Can I get better after surgery?
Since it adjusts the muscle strength of both eyes to balance the new eye, not all patients become normal with one surgery because there is a difference for each patient. In some patients, multiple surgeries may be required.
Why do I have surgery on both eyes or the other eye when I have strabismus in one eye?
As strabismus is a condition in which the two eyes are out of alignment, it is not necessarily the fault of one eye. Patients are asking this question because they are concerned that the eyesight of the operated eye will worse. There are cases where vision deteriorates by leaving the strabismus as it is, but strabismus surgery does not worsen the eyesight, so there is no need to insist on having surgery on only one side.
Depending on the type of strabismus, the surgery results are different, so it is possible to operate on the side with severe strabismus or on the opposite eye, or both eyes.
When is the best time to have a strabismus surgery?
As there are differences depending on the type of strabismus, amount of strabismus, and visual function, the timing of the surgery should be determined in consideration of various situations rather than when it should be performed.
For infants who cannot be examined, it may be better to wait until they can fully cooperate and perform surgery after conducting the accurate examination. However, if findings such as amblyopia due to strabismus are found, surgery should be performed as soon as possible. In addition, if you have severe eye strain, eyes are turned around, you are teased by people around you, or you have problems with interpersonal relationships, it would be good to have surgery. Regardless of age, if you suspect that you have strabismus, it is necessary to receive a diagnosis from an ophthalmologist.
